Underwater grasses are found often in shallow waters (usually less than 6 feet deep). These grasses are called submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV).

  • SAV provides an important habitat for fish and shellfish. They are a food source for waterfowl. They add oxygen to the water. And, they protect shorelines by reducing wave energy.
  • SAV beds can be scarred by small vessel propellers or by larger craft if they run aground.
  • When operating your paddlecraft in shallow areas, be careful not to damage SAV.
